Have you ever heard of the rule that you shouldn’t wear white after labor day? Did you ever wonder why that came to be? Well, I did some research and found out a few funny things. First, it was created in the late 1800s to early 1900s by high society wives, who used it to measure “You Can’t Sit With Us” powers, a.k.a. snobbery post Civil War. Because society’s “old rich,” who came from respectable families, were already threatened or crowded with the “new rich,” or people who made money during the war but were virtually “nobodys” prior to it, they created a bunch of fashion rules to distinguish themselves from the newbies. So even if a girl walked into a party wearing all of the most expensive jewels and designer dresses, if she broke a rule that everyone “in the know” knew (like wearing white after labor day), she wouldn’t be accepted. #MeanGirlsOriginals lol. Isn’t that totally wrong yet totally interesting? It’s so fun to learn about the origins of things we just assume as rules of thumb! And seeing as how it’s completely stupid, I decided to break the rule and wear the color TOTALLY on the day right after labor day! (In the west, Labor day happens at September 1, but for us Tropical folk, it’s on May 1.) So if you are anti snobbery- wear white all year round, before, during or after labor day. Who cares! Similarly, if you are anti bullying, never wear pink on Wednesdays (and if you watch mean girls, you’ll know why!) Missing the beach already and this chic tropical look. Somehow, I like it better than bare-all beach ensembles. What do you think?
